South Africa - Cape Town - V&A Waterfront

Cape Town is a beautiful city, and of all the cities I've been to in the world is most like the States. Its much like a cooler weather San Diego, but cleaner. Lots of majestic cliff side homes like you might find in La Jolla. We stayed at the V&A waterfront, which is the best area to stay in while visiting, I think. Its pretty central, in a nice area, right near the harbor, where there are dozens of restaurants, a huge mall with two movie theaters, "curio" (souvenir) shops, etc.
The weather was cool, probably around 16C, warming up to 19 or 20 midday. Lots of good looking people, excellent freeway and road system, but no Starbucks. Not a single one. Not really any US chains of anything, except for KFC.
The South African food is all meat. Meat, meat, meat. Grilled on a plate, in a stew, whatever, but just lots of meat. And not really cow, either. More stuff like antelope, wildebeest, wild boar, things like that.
Stayed at the Cape Royal Hotel, a beautiful 5 star boutique that also has residences. The rooms were apartments, with separate bedrooms, a full kitchen, washer and dryer, etc. Awesome place to stay. The only place we saw that seems like it might be as good or better a choice was the One & Only hotel, just down the road, the difference being its just a large hotel, with more services, and had a Nobu in it.
The exchange rate with the US dollar is great, too. The South African Rand goes quite far, everything feels like its on sale.

Cape Royal Hotel:

In house brewed Scottish Ales. Delicious.

  1. dude South Africa has McDonalds as well! And we have lots of fish on our menus its not just meat. If you were eating wild meat such as you describe above, you must have been in the tourist spots because the locals definitely eat beef and lamb mostly - when they are not eating chicken!

  2. True, there was lots of fish on the menus in Cape Town, I'll concede that. But I will argue that the "South African cuisine", as demonstrated by the places I went, is meat oriented, specifically game meat oriented, not fish, and that fish, predominated by kingklip, is a function of the seaside nature of Cape Town specifically.
And I'm sure I was in the tourist spots, being a tourist and all :)
    Thanks for reading!
