Kathmandu, the booze

There are four beers available in Kathmandu. Gorka, a local beer named after the Nepalese soldiers. Its a light slightly bitter lager. Tastes okay. Everest, a local beer that I have no idea what this is named after*. Its a light slightly bitter lager. Tastes pretty good. Carlsberg, a Danish beer that is brewed for Nepal in Nepal, a light, slightly bitter lager. Doesn't taste very good. San Miguel, a Philippine beer that is brewed for Nepal in Nepal. A light, slightly bitter lager. Tastes pretty good, not quite as good as Everest. All beers here are served in big 32oz bomber bottles.
Thamel is the city center area with all the bars and the guest houses for backpackers and trekkers. There are bars all over the place. Two bars I went to had a live rock band. One little Nepalese kid singing lead of one of the bands had an incredible rock voice, and a terrible band. The other place had a much bigger crowd, a mix of foreign backpackers, a few tourist types, quite a few granola looking women, some Nepalese locals, and trekkers (trekkers are what they call the hard core guys that go out climbing in the Himalayas). Lots of hookahs being smoked.

* Everything is named after Mt. Everest here, as it is in the shadow of the worlds most famous mountain.
